Red Blood Cell Values on Healthy Korean Adults

Abstract
The importance of establishing authentic normal hematological values in Korea cannot
be overemphasized, as, at present, we are still using the normal values of the western
countries in our medical practice with Korean patients.
As a begining of this study, we have measured hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red blood
cell number with calculations of mean corpuscular hemoglobin(MCH), mean corpuscular
volume(MCV), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration(MCHC), on a total of 280
healthy Korean adults, consisting of 220 Korean Air Line male employees, 20 Korean
Air Line female employees, and 31 Severance Hospital females employees. Their ages
ranged between 21 and 30 and virtually all belonged to the middle class
socio-economically.
For all cases EDTA mixed venous blood was used. R.B.C. count was done with a
Coulter counter, hemoglobin with cyanmethemoglobin method and hematocrit with
microhematocrit method.
The data obtained in this study are summarized in Tables 1 to 7. A brief comparative
analysis of the data with those of the western countries was made.
